Congenital diaphragmatic hernia is an uncommon birth defect, a malformation that affects the lungs as well as producing a hole in the diaphragm, which allows abdominal contents to herniate into the thoracic cavity, usually on the left side. The pressure on growing lungs can affect their normal development.

An estimated one in every 2,000 to 3,000 live births have this deformity, with up to half of these infants failing to survive.
